The City of Stuttgart successfully organized a kick-off workshop at the City Hall on 16 April aiming to lay the foundation for the concrete implementation of the five STEER-NWE pilot projects together with the housing construction companies and carsharing operators. The workshop marks a significant step in the cooperation between the Mobility Department of Stuttgart and the key local stakeholders that will implement e-carsharing in their housing projects.
The workshop gave the opportunity to meet the project managers responsible of the construction projects in person and to link them directly with the carsharing operators that will provide their services once the e-carsharing stations have been installed.
It became clear that each pilot has a different framework and status which must be considered for the integration of e-carsharing for future residents. The participants gained interesting insights into the planning process as well as the needs and constraints of the staff who oversees the housing projects. A major takeaway was that carsharing must be involved early in the planning process to be a practical mobility option and that a standardized process for integrating sustainable mobility into residential construction would simplify the process for all stakeholders. The workshop also highlighted that e-carsharing should not be seen as an isolated solution, but as part of an integrated mobility concept for the neighborhood that covers also other modes of shared mobility, walking, cycling and public transport. All participants confirmed that offering mobility services to neighborhood residents is essential to reach a high utilization of the e-carsharing vehicles.
The second main objective of the workshop was to present the municipal funding program for e-carsharing in neighborhoods. By applying for this funding, housing developers can receive financial support and offer attractive mobility packages for future residents. The participants agreed that regular communication remains useful and very helpful and that it is necessary to bring new mobility services closer to residents, to show flexible and cheap alternatives to owning a car. Attendees praised the workshop’s focused agenda and interactive format, which helped identify challenges and opportunities to strengthen partnerships. A follow-up meeting is planned for autumn 2026 to continue this important dialogue.
